New Zealand Post to deliver free books to promote literacy

Friday, August 12th, 2011

New Zealand Post is set to deliver thousands of books to communities across New Zealand over the next few days in a bid to promote literacy.

The Post is supporting a campaign by Literacy Aotearoa by in which it will deliver 50 assorted boxes of books to 43 branches of the nonprofit around the country.

Launched last night, the Travelling Books project will release both fiction and non-fiction books for children and adults over the coming week.

New Zealand Post, which also sponsors the Book Awards and the Children’s Book Awards, said improving literacy was one of its priority issues.

New Zealand Post’s group sponsorship manager Nicola Airey said: “This is a fun and innovative way to promote reading amongst New Zealanders, by making books available to those who may not be able to access them.”

More than 2,400 books are set to be distributed around New Zealand, with the Travelling Books project encouraging a philosophy of readers passing on their books once they have finished them.

Literacy Aotearoa CEO Bronwyn Yates said: “It’s a simple way of getting the message out there that there are untold new worlds to be discovered within the pages of books, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re young or old, rich or poor – these are worlds you can travel to for exciting new adventures and experiences.”
