Hellenic Post was founded in 1828 along with the modern Greek state, and since 1996 it has been operating as a public limited company owned by the state.
The company provides postal and courier services along with financial, banking and insurance services, and since early 2012 expanded into the mobile phone market in partnership with Vodafone. Banking services are provided in partnership with Hellenic Postbank under an agreement made in 2006.
Hellenic Post has been appointed to provide the universal postal service in Greece until at least December 2028.
The company is currently investing in automating its sorting centres and restructuring the network, as well as the modernisation of its fleet and and integrated IT system. The investment intends to help the company develop in new areas including digital communications, value-added services, hybrid mail, e-fulfillment and logistics.
Financially Hellenic Post has been suffering in the difficult Greek economy, and while it was profitable in 2011, it sank into the red in 2012.
Hellenic Post’s subsidiaries include the independently-run courier business Tachimetafores ELTA SA (ELTA Courier SA), which was launched in January 2001, offering same day, next day, time-definite and international services.
