DHL trials crowd sourced package delivery in Stockholm

Tuesday, September 3rd, 2013

DHL is piloting a new delivery system in Sweden’s capital in which it uses ordinary people to deliver packages to other end consumers.

The “crowd sourced” delivery trial in Stockholm is based around a smartphone app called MyWays, which aims to connect individuals who require a more flexible delivery option for their e-commerce parcels.

Facilitated through DHL Freight’s network of service points in the city, the service sees consumers buying products online specifying a time and place for delivery, as well as the fee offered for delivery.

Once registered in the system, the package is then available for other Stockholm residents – through the MyWays platform – to pick-up from a DHL service point and deliver to the stated time and place in return for the offered delivery fee.

The MyWays app is already available in the Swedish iTunes and Google Play stores, particularly targeting as occasional couriers people who regularly drive past a DHL service point in Stockholm with the offer of extra income.

Through the associated MyWays website, DHL has even developed a game for consumers to play – and win prizes in participating – to deliver packages to certain “hotspots” in the city.

Peter Hesslin, CEO at DHL Freight Sweden, said his company saw the new offering as not only a service for people looking for more flexible package delivery, but also for those who would consider delivering a package for “a little extra money”.

“This is what makes the platform so unique,” he said. “As soon as the package arrives at one of DHL’s collection locations, the recipient and the deliverer confirm the fee and delivery details, all within the mobile app.”

Tests

DHL developed the MyWays concept in its Solutions & Innovations unit, carrying out early tests on the new system with the Swedish outdoor company Addnature.

The company said its tests had suggested Stockholm residents would embrace the idea – both in the additional flexibility for parcel delivery and in the ability to make use of regular city travels in delivering packages for others.

“With MyWays, we were able to offer deliveries to our customers wherever they were this summer,” said Klas Berggren, partner and founder of Addnature.

“The deliveries were handled mainly by students and the reactions have been positive. Many people felt that the concept was exciting and the fact that packages are delivered by private individuals along their daily routes is also beneficial to the environment.”

Great to see about time – “In South Africa they use independent “Owner Drivers” so possibly this could be a extension of that service and a #Revenue Earning #Empowerment tool, using our eWaybill Courier Brokerage software to manage the process make’s it extremely efficient and profitable for all involved.”
