Toll Group opens “Australia’s largest” express parcel sorting facility

Toll Group has just opened its new $170m express parcels facility near Sydney, the largest such facility in Australia. The new 53,000 square metre facility in Bungarribee, 37 miles north west of Australia’s largest city, was custom-built on an 18-hectare site.

Home to 600 employees, the firm said the facility can sort 35,000 parcels an hour, offering capacity for Toll IPEC to grow with the changing needs of its customers, the firm said.

The facility is close to key transport links to Sydney and the rest of Australia, and features state-of-the-art design along with the latest equipment.

“The selection of this site was not an accident – it is a testament to the hard work of some of the best minds in the logistics industry,” said Toll Group managing director Brian Kruger.

“This facility itself is key to consolidating Toll’s position as a leading provider of logistics services and in growing our extensive national distribution network over the next 20 years and beyond.”

Safety

Toll said the key design features of the new facility were related to safety.

Toll IPEC executive general manager Rodney Johnston said the facility has greater separation for forklifts and pedestrians, reducing the need for them to share floor space.

“The entire facility has a much stronger traffic management plan than in previous depots, due to key design initiatives relating to freight profile, truck type and traffic flow,” he said.

“This will help us to maintain our capacity at peak times.”

“For our freight handlers, the chutes have been redesigned to allow for easier lifting and manoeuvring. And lastly, we have implemented scissor-lifts to prevent injuries while unloading pallets,” Johnston added.

Toll Group is currently in the process of building another large parcel sorting facility in Melbourne. The $150m project is expected to be even larger than the Sydney facility at 71,000 square metres.
