FedEx Express breaks ground on gateway facility at Copenhagen Airport

FedEx Express is building a new gateway facility at Copenhagen Airport to expand its operations in the Nordic region. The company broke ground on the facility at the start of this month after opening eight logistics facilities since 2011 to serve Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

It should be completed by the end of next year.

The new 8,000 square metre facility will serve as an entry point for inbound and outbound shipments for the four Nordic countries, serving 18 weekly FedEx Express flights and 170 truck movements each week.

It will include freight and sorting facilities in a single location, supported by automated sorting technology that is expected to process around 11,500 packages per day.

About 120 FedEx Express employees will be based at the leased facility in the airport’s cargo area near the Øresund Strait.

The new facility comes as part of a broader expansion by FedEx Express in Europe.

“Ideal choice”

Helena Jansson, FedEx Express vice president of finance for Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent, said her company was investing in the new facility to improve customers’ connections from the Nordics to Europe and the rest of the world.

“Copenhagen is an ideal choice because of its strong freight transport infrastructure and the central location of its airport,” she said.

“In the last three years, we have expanded our presence across Europe opening more than 100 new stations–of which eight are in the Nordics. Our new Copenhagen gateway is a key part of our growth strategy and, like elsewhere in Europe where we’ve invested, customers in this region will benefit from earlier deliveries and later pick-up times.”

FedEx said its shipping data has shown shipments from the Nordic countries to the rest of Europe increasing by more than 17% in the 12 months up to the end of June 2014, compared to the previous year. Growth for shipments to North America was running at 7% year-on-year.

The company said its new FedEx Express Nordic gateway facility should allow earlier deliveries for shipments to customers in Denmark and southern Sweden, and later pick-ups for items leaving the area.
