PostNL launches city logistics service in Delft

Dutch postal operator PostNL has launched a new city logistics project in the city of Delft. Stadslogistiek (City Logistics) Delft is a service in which goods destined for addresses within the city centre are instead dropped off at a location on the edge the city, at Staalweg.

PostNL uses electric vehicles to deliver items consolidated at the Staalweg facility to homes and businesses in the city centre.

The service is a collaboration between the national postal operator and the municipality of Delft, and designed to make the city centre more livable by removing some of the heavy goods vehicles required to make deliveries.

The electric vehicles used by PostNL for the last mile state are cleaner and quieter than the delivery vehicles they replace.

Yesterday saw PostNL chief executive Herna Verhagen launching the service with Councillor Stephan Brandligt. The Councillor said the hope was that where possible all shipments destined for the city centre might one day be delivered via the City Logistics facility.

He said he hoped many businesses in Delft would look to use the service.

In future, the service is expected to develop to provide additional features such as same day delivery, so that consumers ordering items from a store during the day might receive items during an evening home delivery.
