Emirates Post to offer electronic payment cards in post offices

Emirates Post has signed an agreement with the government of the United Arab Emirates to allow customers to buy and recharge e-Dirham cards at post offices. The memorandum of understanding was signed with the Ministry of Finance to open access to the country’s electronic payment system to 115 post offices.

The e-Dirham system was first launched by the UAE government in early 2001, initially for use by federal government services, before it was expanded to local governments within individual emirates, and later the private sector.

The cards are a kind of secure electronic purse, available either as non-rechargable fixed-value cards, or cards that can be recharged, but which can only be used by the card holder.

Saeed Rashid Al Yateem, the assistant undersecretary of resources and budget sector at the Ministry, said: “The agreement allows Emirates Post to start selling, charging and re-charging e-Dirham system cards, which is a new value addition to the system.”

“Emirates Post follows a local and global geographical expansion policy and adopts electronic systems that can boost the progress of the e-Dirham system as a national project aimed at raising the efficiency of e- services as well as reducing operational costs,” he said.

Ibrahim bin Karam, the chief commercial officer at Emirates Post, said the new service came as part of its strategy to boost public services with “advanced” administrative and technical systems.

“The Group also offers superior follow-up methods for the benefit of customers,” he added. “In addition, EPG also provides smart services through mobile apps as well as online services which attract 1.2 million visitors per month and enjoy 94% satisfaction rate.”
