Doorman opening in Chicago and New York

Doorman, a US-based start-up providing evening deliveries for e-commerce packages, will be extending its coverage into Chicago and New York City. In a blog posted on its website a few days ago, the company said that “the wind is blowing us right into the Windy City… Even more news, after Chicago, we’re heading to New York City.”

Founded by Zander Adell, a former Pixar Technical Director, and Kapil Israni (former IBM), Doorman started operations in the San Francisco area, where it has thus far delivered around 25,000 parcels. The Midwest and East Coast cities are set to come online this summer.

Doorman – much like the Australian start-up After Hours Deliveries which Post&Parcel wrote about on Monday – offers a delivery forwarding service. Consumers buying goods online give the retailer their “personal Doorman shipping address”, which is a location in the local Doorman depot. Doorman sends notifications when the parcels arrive and the consumers use the Doorman app to schedule evening delivery to their homes at a time which suits them. Doorman delivers from 6 pm to midnight with hourly scheduling, seven days a week.

In addition to expanding its delivery coverage, Doorman is launching an API which will allow retail partners to integrate Doorman’s scheduling functionality directly into their own websites and applications.

The company offers consumers three pricing options: $3.99 per package, with two-hour delivery windows; a Silver membership costing $19 per month, which offers unlimited deliveries and two-hour delivery windows; and Gold costing $29 a month, which offers unlimited deliveries, one-hour delivery windows and unlimited package returns. Doorman also advises that “packages over 45 lbs or over 75 linear inches may include an additional fee and delay in delivery”. The company offers to ship new customers’ first package for free, to get them started.
