India Post looking to reduce reliance on railways

India Post is looking to reduce its reliance on the railway network and shift more business onto the roads, according to local sources. The sources claim that this is primarily a response to the growth in e-commerce parcels – which require a fast service and more tracking and monitoring. Local sources reported that India Post has encountered difficulties in installing monitoring and security equipment in the train compartments.

“We need to change our delivery mechanism, which has remained the same over the decades. We have to evolve with the changing dynamics, especially seeing the boom in e-commerce. Shifting to a road network will ensure a secure and quick delivery of parcels,” an official from the department of posts (DoP) was quoted as saying.
