E-Mail will never replace letters completely, says Malaysia Post Senior GM

Thursday, October 31st, 2002

Malaysia Post senior general manager II (business and support services) SM Haja Alawdin S. Md Sulaiman said today the postal service continued to enjoy an annual growth of between three and five per cent.

“In some States, the growth is much higher. Kelantan, for example, recorded an 18 per cent growth this year,” he said.

He said Pos Malaysia was handling 3.5 million letters per day which worked out to about one billion per year.

“E-mail only plays a supplementing role and is not a threat to postal service,” he said, adding postmen could be assured of their jobs.

Haja Alawdin was speaking after a briefing on Pos Malaysia operations in Kelantan by State manager Wan Mohd Zain Wan Mamat.

He said even in the United States, which was so advanced, people there still preferred to use mail for correspondence.

“The US Postal Service is handling half a billion letters a week,” he said.

Haja Alawdin said business clients were the top postal service users.

“Revenue from mail still contributed the highest to Pos Malaysia’s coffers. Postal service is here to stay because the mail never seems to end,” he said.

On Pos Laju, he said the national courier service was controlling about 40 per cent of the domestic market share comprising 10 million items annually.

“Compared to other courier companies, we have easier access as customers can just walk in to any of the 600 post offices nationwide which provide the service,” he said.
