Amazon reportedly planning to open Manhattan bookstore

Amazon is planning to open a bricks-and-mortar bookshop in Manhattan’s Time Warner Center sometime this year, according to media sources. The news about the New York book store was first reported in the Wall Street Journal.

Amazon opened its first physical bookstore in its home town Seattle in late 2015 and it has since opened two more locations on the US West Coast.

In addition to its bookstores, Amazon has also been experimenting with a new convenience store concept in Seattle. Called “Amazon Go”, this is a convenience store with a difference: there are no cashiers and no checkout. Instead, customers scan their phone using the Amazon Go app on the way into the store, and their Amazon account will be charged for items taken. Although the new-concept grocery store has generated considerable media interest, GeekWire (the Seattle-based technology website) reported on Tuesday (3 January) that the store is currently still in “beta testing” and is scheduled to open to the public early this year.
