TNT's contrarian view

While other express carriers have built airfreight networks with numerous international flights, TNT is keeping its eyes on the ground. The Dutch integrated carrier is establishing a domestic ground network based on the acquisition of a large Chinese parcel and logistics operator, Hoau Logistics Group.

Hoau, established in 1995 and based in Heilongjiang, has more than 1,100 depots in China, along with more than 3,000 trucks and 12,000 employees. This gives TNT a huge footprint in the world’s favorite growth market, but it is not an express network, admitted Marie Christine Lombard, managing director of TNT Express.

TNT to Complete Acquisition of HOAU by 2006

TNT is expected to complete acquisition of HOAU Logistics Group by the end of this year. TNT is buying HOAU Logistics, the biggest freight & parcels operator in mainland China, for USD 135 million, which is much higher than estimated CNY 900 million. The acquisition price was disclosed by Tian Yu, director general of the Jiamusi Municipal Merchants Bureau, at Heilongjiang Provincial Merchants Promotion Conference. However, TNT says any detail shouldn’t be disclosed now that it is in the process of acquisition at present. Ken McCall, CEO of TNT China, told journalists that TNT will increase its Chinese employees to 12,000-14,000 from existing 4,000-5,000 upon the completion of the acquisition.

TNT in advanced negotiations to acquire Hoau, China’s leading domestic freight & parcels operator

TNT announced today it is in the process of acquiring China’s leading freight and parcels transportation operator, Hoau Logistics Group, based in Heilongjiang. The deal is expected to be completed in the course of next year. Both companies have signed a Letter of Intent for this purpose. Through this acquisition, TNT will become the largest privately owned transportation network for freight and parcels in China. TNT already operates the largest distribution infrastructure in China with 140 operating facilities, covering 2.4 million square metres of warehouse space across 600 cities.
