DHL boosts South Asia trade with enhanced express services

DHL has enhanced its services within the South Asia/SAARC region with new air and ground express products designed to support trade between the neighbouring countries.

The new products are the expansion of the Blue Dart ‘Road Express’ service to Bangladesh and the introduction of the premium guaranteed money-back service ‘Express 10:30’ in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) covers India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives.

During the last few years, DHL Express has made substantial investments of over USD 300 million towards the development and upgrading of its network infrastructure in India, including five gateways in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata and over 150 retail outlets. In addition, a state-of-the-art Quality Control Centre and large shipment-processing areas aim at providing seamless express and logistics service solutions to Indian exporters.

Postal service disrupted as employees go on strike

Postal employees announcing closure of all the post offices around the country from Friday to protest government’s ‘indifference’ towards fulfilling their demands.

According to Subodh Devkota of Nepal Civil Servants Association, some 20,000 employees working in post offices across the country have halted works calling for the fulfillment of their demands which includes improvement in their working conditions and timely pay hikes, among others.

Devkota said they were compelled to take the drastic measure of closing down all the post offices as the government continued to turn a deaf ear to their demands despite their protests over the last one month. He said they would be forced to announce indefinite strike in all post offices if the government’s attitude remains unchanged.

People especially from the rural parts of Nepal who rely on postal services to get in touch with their near and dear ones both inside the country and abroad have been affected the most due to the strike in post offices.

Postal workers on strike in Nepal

Nepal Civil Service Employees Union (NECSEU-Postal) along with other groups of union went on strike at General Post Office (GPO Kathmandu ) and all post offices through out the country, demanding respect at work, trade union rights, postal allowances and improvement of postal services and it’s offices.

On 25 July 2007, they met with Minister of Information & Communication (MoIC) and other Ministry Officials to fulfill their demands as soonest.

After their meeting with Minister Mr. Madhav Neupane President of NECSEU Postal wing informed, “Minister was serious towards the issue”

At the same time he also enforced that if government doesn’t response to their demand, they will start another step of strike. Although the postal service is the most important service, but it has been neglected by Government policies. More than 10000 workers are employed in this service and it has to compete with private sector. Competing in the market is not possible with out improving the services and infrastructures and encouraging postal workers.
