Ocado shares jump on rumours of Amazon tie-up

The value of Ocado shares jumped by 16% this morning (19 January), following reports in the UK press of “rumours in the city” that the online grocery delivery specialist may be about to agree a tie-up with Amazon. As previously reported, Amazon has already launched its own Amazon Pantry service in the UK . But a report published by the Daily Mail last night said that the two companies might be looking to work together on a “fully-fledged” service offering a much wide range of products than that available through Amazon Pantry.

The Daily Mail report suggested that Amazon might be looking to buy Ocado, not just strike up a partnership, and it quoted an unnamed market source as saying: “For Amazon, it would be a perfect fit”.

There has been no official comment from Amazon or Ocado.
