Strike threat in UK postal pay claim

Leaders of thousands of postal workers are drawing up plans for a “substantial” pay claim backed up by the threat of industrial action, it was revealed today. The newly-elected deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union said he believed postmen and women were “very restless” over pay and wanted a decent increase this year. Dave Ward pledged to campaign for a new basic salary of GBP300-a-week, compared to the present basic of GBP261. A pay claim will be tabled in October which is expected to call for a “substantial” rise above the rate of inflation. “The mood is that come October we will be looking for a substantial increase and we will be prepared to back that up with industrial action.

Can this man make An Post shine again

Donal Curtin is tipped to lead the state-owned operation but he will need to live up to his tough image to deliver the goods, write Jane Suiter and Ruth O’Callaghan.

When Tadhg O’Donoghue, chairman of the ESB, told Donal Curtin in June 2001 that his plan to expand operations into Poland through the acquisition of eight electricity supply plants for Euro 1.7 billion had been shot down by Charlie McCreevy, the head of the company’s international division was more than a little taken aback. “He was incandescent with rage,” says one person familiar with the situation.

Curtin, 55, is a man who usually gets his own way and won’t accept second best. He has also emerged as favourite to succeed John Hynes as chief executive of An Post, the embattled state-owned post office. His appointment has still not been finalised by the company’s directors and the company will only confirm that the board has agreed to open negotiations with a “preferred” candidate.

The scale of the task facing the new boss should not be underestimated.

An Post to seek new deal

John Hynes, the chief executive of An Post, has begun talks to renegotiate the firm’s postal agreement with international carriers in line with demands from Etain Doyle, the postal regulator.
Under the current agreement, which An Post has still not signed, other postal services pay 73% of the price of a standard 41c stamp in Ireland to have international mail delivered. An Post pays 73% of the price of the stamp in other countries to have Irish mail delivered there.

An Post said it lost EUR40m on international deliveries last year. In recent months, ComReg, the postal regulator, ordered the company to renegotiate the agreement by the beginning of July.
