Japan Post and Mitsukoshi in talks to form joint delivery service firm

Japan Post and department store chain Mitsukoshi Ltd. are in talks to reach an agreement within this month on their formation of a joint delivery service company, informed sources said Thursday. Ahead of its privatization starting in October 2007, Japan Post has been enhancing its delivery and other logistical services. It has acquired Asocia Corp., a logistical service unit of Daimaru Inc., another department store chain. Some private-sector entities have criticized Japan Post for affecting private-sector services by expanding services while remaining under state control.

Ministers challenged over UK Post Office chief

The Government was today challenged over the appointment of Post Office chairman Allan Leighton. Opening a debate on the Royal Mail, former postman and ex-union officer Labour’s Lord Clarke of Hampstead told trade and industry minister Lord Sainsbury of Turville the issue “concerns the method of selecting Mr Leighton for the job”. He told peers: “Two years ago I was told by a very reliable friend, who actually knew what was going on and witnessed it, that when the short list was prepared and presented to the board, Mr Leighton’s name was not on that list. “The information I received … said that a call was made from the DTI to the board to have Mr Leighton’s name added.

Austrian Post AG part privatisation approved

The Austrian Government gave permission to state-holding and privatisation agency OeIAG on January 12, 2006 to sell up to 49 pct of state-owned postal company Oesterreichische Post AG over the stock exchange. Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel called the move a very important step which would lead to an initial public offering (IPO) of Post AG. It is now up to the OeIAG and its IPO advisers to select the exact date. The government will retain the remaining 51 pct in Post AG and Schuessel said it was not necesssary to anchor this amount in the constitution.

French Banque Postale targets 25 pct client rise in 5 yrs

Newly created Banque Postale, a unit of French post office La Poste, said it aims to increase its client base by 25 pct by 2010, to 10 mln clients, and that it will launch a line of life insurance products. The bank was created Jan 1 from La Poste’s financial services activities after it was authorised to engage in additional banking services amid opposition by French commercial banks.

DHL to build its largest US service center in New York City

DHL today announced plans to build its largest US service center facility in New York City, New York. The USD181 Million investment will consolidate two existing service center locations into a new 161,125-sq.-ft. facility to serve Manhattan pickup, delivery and sorting operations. Strategically located to provide rapid egress and regress through below-grade access through the Lincoln Tunnel, the new service center will increase throughput capacity from 10,000 to 15,000 pieces per hour. “DHL is continually looking for ways to improve and enhance service through investments in our US operations,” said Mark Munoz, senior area vice president of operations for DHL. “This new facility will serve as our gateway to the New York City market and with the strategic location near the Lincoln Tunnel will provide enhanced service levels for all of our local customers as well as accommodate growth for the next twenty years.”

Austrian Post EBIT reportedly up 5.0 Pct Y/Y 2005

Austrian state-owned postal company Oesterreichische Post AG increased its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) by 5.0 pct year-on-year to 91.2 mln euro (USD110.5 mln) in 2005, sources close to the company said on January 11, 2006. Post AG revenue rose by 2.0 pct to 1.626 bln euro (USD1.969 bln). The number of employees decreased to 24,000 in 2005 from 25,400 in 2004. The company, which is expected to announce its final 2005 results in February 2006, did not confirm these figures.

UPS says it will add overseas letter delivery to package service for its Europe customers

United Parcel Service, Inc. said Wednesday it would offer overseas letter delivery to its package customers in Europe. The company would offer the new letter service in February – expanding a test project begun in Britain to Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, UPS spokesman Georg Leusch said from the company’s German offices in Neuss. “The numbers there have far exceeded our plans,” he said. Leusch said letters would be collected unsorted in mail bags from customers and forwarded to foreign destinations by UPS’ partner, Swiss Post International.
