Irish An Post seeks partner for new move to banking

An Post has written to 28 financial institutions in the first stage of a process which could see the post office network restructured as a fully-fledged bank by sometime next year.

The postal company is hoping to leverage off its network of 1500 post offices and its reputation as a safe and reputable company, in order to take a slice of the most profitable banking market in Europe.

An Post wrote to five indigenous and 23 foreign banks earlier this week asking them to submit initial proposals within 10 weeks. Based on these submissions, the list of possible partners will be reduced to less than 10. Detailed discussion will then take place with the short-listed banks and the final partner is expected to be chosen by the end of the year.

World Bank and ‘La Poste’ team up to reach socially responsible French investors

The World Bank and La Poste, the French postal system, have teamed up to offer a new investment product for French retail investors. For the first time starting today, individual investors will be able to purchase a La Poste financial product called ‘Toniciel Banque Mondiale,’ making it easier for individuals to help fund, and have direct information on, the World Bank’s programs in developing countries. From June 6 to July 20, 2005, La Poste clients will be able to invest a minimum of EUR500 in the La Poste 5-year term deposit, ‘Toniciel Banque Mondiale.’ The funds invested in this product will be used by La Poste to purchase a bond issued by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the main lending arm of the World Bank.

FedEx to build California’s largest corporate solar power system on FedEx facility in Oakland

FedEx Corp. and the City of Oakland today announced that FedEx Express will construct California’s largest corporate solar electric system atop its hub at Oakland International Airport. The 904-kilowatt solar array will provide approximately 80 percent of the peak load demand for the company’s Oakland facility, which employs 1,700 people. Completion is expected in May 2005. “With this project, FedEx will deliver more environmental innovation to California,” said Mitch Jackson, managing director, corporate and international environmental programs, FedEx Express. “From hybrid electric delivery trucks to solar power, we are proud to lead our industry in committing to real, practical ways to reduce pollution, conserve fossil fuels, and contribute to a greener world.” “FedEx is proving that solar power works for business,” said Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown.

UK Postcomm competition proposals are recipe for white van man postal chaos say Amicus

Amicus the union representing postal managers, has condemned today’s announcement by postal services regulator Postcomm for the full opening of the postal services market to competition as premature and likely to result in postal chaos. The union which represents 14,000 post office managers will be pressing Postcomm to ensure provision of the universal service at a uniform price and to conduct a full review of the impact and effect of competition introduced earlier this year before any further extension of the postal market. Peter Skyte, Amicus’ National Officer for postal services, said: “Postcomm’s proposals for full opening of the postal market to competition in 2006 are premature, given that there has been insufficient time to make any realistic assessment of the impact of the initial letters market opening introduced only a few months ago. As they stand they will also put at risk the universal postal service in Britain and provide the potential for every white van man to chase postal business without adequate safeguards for security, integrity and sustainability of the public postal service. Postcomm must think again.”

Swiss Post Office launches wooden stamp

There have been Swiss stamps smelling of chocolate and made of lace, and now there’s one with an Alpine forest feel. Swiss Post has launched its latest unusual commemorative stamp – a square of pinewood roughly the thickness of a credit card.

Designed by Thomas Rathgeb, a Swiss Post graphic artist, the stamps are made from 120-year-old pines felled in northern Switzerland. They have a face value of 5 Swiss francs, or 4 dollars.
