Gloves are off in bitter wrangle at Irish An Post

The essence of the management view of the rapidly escalating industrial dispute at An Post is “the postmen failed to deliver so we are going to collect”.

Over the weekend management has suspended nearly 300 postal sorters at the Dublin mail centre without pay. This came after the main union, the Communications Workers’Union (CWU) decided on to pull back for a week on implementation of themembership ballot which, earlier this month, approved action by an 86pc majority. Ostensibly, the threatened strike is a response to a management decision in Novembernot to pay the first 3pc phase under the Sustaining Progress pay deal at the heavilyloss-making state company.

300 An Post staff suspended as Irish mail dispute grows

An escalating mail dispute in Dublin looks set to bring the Irish Republic’s entire postal service to its knees as the number of staff suspended topped 300.

A further 32 workers and nine van drivers were sent home as the row over changes in work practices at Dublin’s mail centre worsened.
They join more than 260 suspended for failing to carry out certain duties.

An Post took out advertisements in national newspapers warning customers in Co Dublin not to send any mail until further notice.

Irish Postal strike on ice as CWU calls for talks

The prospect of a postal strike receded last night after a public appeal by the Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) to An Post management “to reengage with the union immediately in relation to all outstanding issues”.

Earlier this week, the company urged the postal unions to resume negotiations on its strategic plan.

The CWU walked out of negotiations in December, the company claims.

The Communications Workers’ Union (CWU) has issued a stinging rebuke to An Post senior management following a meeting of the union’s Executive Council to discuss possible strike action.

Following a recent ballot, which delivered an overwhelming mandate for industrial action, the Executive Council met to consider the union’s next step.

Irish An Post countrywide strike looming

A countrywide postal strike has moved closer as a result of an overwhelming vote by workers at An Post to pursue industrial action. Members of the Communications Workers Union (CWU) have voted 83pc in favour of such action in a bid to secure pay rises. The union is refusing to accept a claim by management that it cannot afford to pay the 3pc wage rise due under the national pay deal.
