Postal job cuts

The Swiss Post Office has announced plans to drastically reduce its mail processing centres and cut 2,500 jobs.
Under the proposals, which still need final confirmation by the board of directors, the country’s 18 mail sorting centres would be closed and replaced by only three units.

Swiss Postal Service to be deregulated

According to a decision by the National Council (lower house) taken last Thursday, Swiss parcel post will be totally deregulated as of the year 2004.

As to first-class letters, the limit of the Swiss Postal Service’s monopoly will be reduced to items weighing no more than 100 grams by 2006. Motions by leftist parties to block these moves were defeated.

MailSource, Swiss Post’s subsidiary for the management of internal company postal services, is building up its market position after a two-year start-up period in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Italy: on 2 September 2002 MailSource took over Mailroom Management Services Ltd (MMS), one of the UK market leaders in its core business of internal postal services. Swiss Post’s foothold in international markets will reinforce its leadership in Switzerland and will enable MailSource to offer both Swiss and global major customers cross-border services.

Swiss Post to aquire remaining 10% of Setz Gütertransport AG

Swiss Post is to acquire the remaining 10% of the shares in logistics company Setz Gütertransport AG. This will give the state-owned postal services a 100% control of the firms capital.
Swiss Post bought 90% of the shares back in 1997 from Hanspeter Setz, then the owner of the company. The original purchase was designed to facilitate the provision of complete logistics solutions in addition to purely mail-related services.
Full control of Setz Gütertransport AG is part of Swiss Posts strategy of continuing to build up a strategic position in the international logistics market.
