USPS Commits Support to Liberia Post

The Postmaster General of the United States, Mr. John Potter has reportedly pledged the United Sates Postal Services (USPS) “firm and practical” commitment to providing support in the area of equipment and training for the revitalization of Liberia’s Postal network. According to a dispatch from the United States, the US Postmaster General made the commitment over the weekend during an hour-long meeting with his Liberian counterpart Post and Telecommunications Minister Eugene Nagbe in Washington D.C. The dispatch said the United States Postal Service comments came after a formal acceptance of a non-monetary Technical Assistance Package presented by Minister Nagba for the revamp of Liberia’s damaged postal service network and infrastructure. Postmaster General Potter, the dispatch said, also urged his Liberian counterpart to make the postal service in Liberia “business driven, market oriented and consonant with universally acceptable standards, and principles” Responding, Liberia’ Postal Minister recounted the cordial working relationship previously existing between the two postal administrations and conveyed appreciation of the Liberian Government for the USPS “selfless and emphatic” commitment to the rehabilitation of its postal service. Minister Nagbe said his administration would seek to build a modernized postal services which would combine traditional mail delivery techniques with new and unconventional methods such as electronic mailing utilization, computer-based mail sorting and routing, money order and re-numeration of postal zones and districts to meet changing demographic trends. The meeting between the two Postmaster-Generals is the first of its kind since the civil war. Meanwhile, the dispatch said the head of the United Nations Postal Department Mr. Bob Gray said the UN Post is exploring ways of assisting the Liberia’s Postal service in its reconstruction effort.
