DHL opts for NCR Teradata’s Data Warehouse
DHL, Deutsche Post World Net’s express and logistics service provider, is standardizing the IT systems used by its various subsidiaries on a central information platform. This will in future enable DHL’s customers to find out even more quickly and reliably where their shipment is at the present time. What makes it all possible is a company-wide data warehouse system which has been developed by the Augsburg company NCR Teradata. It has enabled Deutsche Post World Net to complete a further stage on the path towards fully integrating its logistics activities under the DHL brand.
The centerpiece of the new Track&Trace system is a standardized database and a sophisticated software system which is used to record all DHL shipments. This will enhance faster access to data. In addition, the system’s storage capacity has been increased, enabling shipment data to be archived for longer periods. With this system, DHL offers key accounts a convenient and straightforward way of retrieving shipment data. “We anticipate that the system’s capacity will be utilized to a far greater extent in the future,” explains Martin Kolbe, Managing Director and CIO of DHL Express Germany. That applies both to the data volume and to the number of database queries.
Apart from the benefits for customers, DHL has also improved its cost efficiency with the introduction of the new system. Previously, shipments were recorded in a large number of different databases, resulting in higher maintenance and administration costs.
These tasks are reduced to a minimum by using the standardized system. “In addition to providing better and faster information, the consolidation generates significant cost savings,” says Martin Kolbe. Moreover, DHL now has the means, based on data that is gathered centrally, to respond more quickly to changes in customer behavior and the resulting capacity requirements.
NCR Teradata is a subsidiary of NCR Corporation and a global market leader in the area of data warehousing as well as a leader in technologies for analyzing company-wide data. NCR Corporation has its headquarters in Dayton, USA and has a global workforce of around 29,300.
