Palletline set for radio frequency tagging.

Palletline is to use radio frequency (RFID) to tag all pallets in its UK network from the first quarter of 2004.
Chairman Bob Russet left) says RFID will replace bar-coding as the network’s main technology and will be ‘a huge step forward’, improving track and trace and reducing operating costs. The network has been following RFID for two years and trialling it for two months.
The industry will follow Palletline ‘very quickly’, Russet predicts. ‘RFID will be the thing of 2004.’ Palletline’s members will have a head start if they want to use it for other parts of their business.
Bar-coding is fine for smaller systems but not for those with 10-11,000 pallets a night, he adds.
Russet says he doubts if any other transport firm is using RFID.
Palletline is also to train middle managers throughout the network using both internal and external trainers, Russet says. The training will include Palletline’s new software house Vigo and installed this summer.
Russet confirmed that Palletline has identified the site for a major new hub and that planning permission has been applied for.
