Vital TNT operation to be run out of Dubai hub

TNT has signed an import service agreement with Somal Post, the country’s postal network which means the integrator can access all of Somalia. TNT’s entire Somalia operation will be co-ordinated out of its Middle East, Africa and India hub in Dubai.

The agreement was signed by Somal Post Chairman Sharif Ahmed Sharif at TNT’s regional headquarters in Dubai. ‘This will enhance the image of Somal post, be of major assistance to the country of Somalia generally and be a huge boost for Somalis at home and abroad,’ said Mr Sharif.

‘We are delighted to be undertaking this venture with TNT and have no doubt it will be a highly successful relationship. TNT is very well regarded and our infrastructure is very strong inside Somalia.’

Mr Sharif said Somalia was recovering from a lengthy period of civil war. ‘But things are definitely improving and the time is right for TNT to come in with such a comprehensive service. The economy is definitely heading in the right direction, telecommunications is very strong.’

TNT’s Associate and Supports Project manager, Tim Frank, described the signing as a proud moment for TNT. ‘Somalia represents the last piece of the global jigsaw for TNT after we started servicing Afghanistan and Iraq,’ said Frank.

‘There are others in our industry in Somalia but they make little impact on the market. We wanted to do it right and our agreement with Somal Post enables us to do that, to offer a service second to none across the spectrum of the country.’

TNT’s consignments will come from all over the world to the Dutch-owned firm’s hub in Dubai then be forwarded to Somalia, in these early stages with Somalia’s Juba Airways which flies to the UAE twice-weekly.

Initially consignments are likely to be documents and parcels. Many of these will probably be sent by Somali expatriates, especially in Canada and Britain. However, the range is quickly expected to stretch to aid, spare parts and textiles

Frank said staff from Somalia are to be trained in Dubai to ensure the finest possible service to the consumers in the African nation.
