Falling market share of private Spanish postal service operators

Spain’s around 200 privately owned postal service operators have seen their overall market share plummet from 15 per cent to 8 per cent during the last six years, according to Asempre, the federation of private Spanish postal service operators. At the same time, Correos, Spain’s state-controlled postal service operator, has increased its market share to 92 per cent.

Asempre has therefore filed a complaint against Correos at Spain’s anti-trust tribunal, claiming that the state-owned group takes advantage of its dominant market position. The federation has also asked Spain’s ministry for public works to set up an independent body which will oversee the country’s postal service sector and help to create a truly deregulated market. At present, Spain’s postal sector is regulated by the ministry for public works itself.
