Emerging markets drive DHL’s international success

“We attribute our international growth to our recognition of emerging markets which contributes 200,000 customers to our worldwide figure of 4.2 million across the globe,” said David Wild, General Manager, DHL UAE.

Started as a separate region in 2000, DHL’s Emerging Markets division was set up to service 93 countries across a 14 hour time zone. The countries were grouped by area; CIS and Russia, South East Europe and North Africa, Middle East, Sub Saharan Africa and Turkey.

DHL, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has out-stripped its two leading competitors by making more international deliveries than the two combined, according to a globally sourced business website.

“By aligning these countries according to similar needs, issues, potential and expectations we made our venture into new territory much more manageable. However, we were determined to be aware and acknowledge that all the countries are diverse in culture, language and standards. This was the key to our success in these emerging markets,” said Wild.

The Middle East was chosen as an emerging market as DHL believes it possesses oases of incredible potential.

“Our belief in the region has paid off. We have been operating here for over 30 years, we have offices in all 13 countries in the Middle East, over 2,200 employees and we are transporting over 95 million kgs a year,” said Wild.

DHL in the Middle East attributes one of its key elements of growth and success to its status as the only logistics and express company to have its own dedicated fleet of aircraft.

This fleet is headquartered in Bahrain and consists of seven aircraft along with an extensive land transport network that includes heavy vehicles and facilities.

“Having our own air and road fleet has been a major factor in our key logistics contract wins and this has ensured our growth and success in the region,” said Wild.

“We are also actively pursuing links which would give us a road network right through to Europe. This again demonstrates the importance of emerging markets to our successful international business.”
