DHL, Jamaica Post now in partnership
THE INTERNATIONAL courier service provider, DHL Express Inc., through its Jamaican subsidiary, DHL Jamaica Limited, is another commercial partner of Jamaica Post.
DHL has drop-off facilities at four post offices in the Corporate Area. The four post offices are Meadowbridge (Kingston 19), Constant Spring (Kingston 8), Liguanea (Kingston 6) and Hagley Park (Kingston 11).
Drop-off facilities, as the name suggests, are for outbound items only. Customers of DHL can take their packages for shipment to the post offices mentioned, where a p ostal clerk will prepare the customary DHL documentation, and collect the relevant payments, for which DHL receipts are issued. DHL personnel make routine daily visits to those post offices, to collect packages left by customers, at these locations. Packages are then shipped from the DHL head office located on Haining Road.
The post office drop-off points fill a gap in the DHL operations in Jamaica. The most significant benefit to DHL and customers of the post office who use the service is convensient access to an international service. As a leading player in the international express delivery and logistics business, DHL Express has been making significant strides in all areas of its operations. The company recently opened a US$100 million dedicated central Asia hub in Hong Kong, and already there are signs that the terminal`s handling capacity will have to be expanded ahead of schedule.
Chief executive (Asia Pacific) John Mullen said a daily volume target DHL set for 2008 was achieved thfe week before the new hub was officially opened. DHL expects its share in Asia Pacific`s express logistics market to grow at a steady rate of one to two per cent in the next few years, mainly due to its China operations. Mullen said DHL`s share of the market currently stands at about 40 per cent, while competitor Federal Express has about 29 per cent market share, and other rivals like United Parcel Service Inc. and TNT Express have 19 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
