US Postal Service lauded at global postal conference

The U.S. Postal Service has gained international recognition for on-time delivery performance and customer care for its Global Express Mail (GEM) service. Paul Vogel, USPS vice president of Network Operations Management, accepted an award for GEM in Bucharest, Romania, at the 23rd Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress, a gathering attended by members of postal services worldwide.

GEM, one of the Postal Service’s expedited international mail delivery offerings, provides fast service to 18 countries. Prices start at $15.50, and customers can receive volume discounts, online tracking and pickup on demand.

The Postal Service’s achievements that were honored reflect the combined efforts of its call centers and its operations network. “This recognition is a testament to all our employees associated with providing Express Mail Service,” Vogel said. “Of particular note are those in the field at our international service centers, processing plants and delivery units,” he added, while accepting the Express Mail Service Cooperative’s Silver Level Certificate from UPU Director General Thomas Leavey.

Of the few world postal services recognized at the UPU Congress, most awards were given to very small countries. The Universal Postal Union Congress, which meets every four years, gathered in Romania from Sept. 15 through Oct. 5. The next Congress will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2008.
