CNMC to investigate Correos Spain

CNMC to investigate Correos Spain

The Spanish National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) is investigating Correos‘ pricing and says it believes that the post office may be in breach of its own regulations.

The CNMC will be looking at:

  • The discounts that Correos applies to large clients, such as companies and public administrations, for their mass shipments are well below their costs.
  • The prices paid by private customers for the national blue package (up to 20 kg) and for the package bound for Europe are above the average of other countries.
  • The CNMC will investigate the possible failure by Correos of the regulations of the Universal Postal Service.

The CNMC has approved the Resolution that reviews the prices of postal services provided by Correos under the regime of public service obligations for the year 2020. ( STP / DTSP / 058/19 ).

Among the supervisory functions attributed to the CNMC in postal material, it is to verify that the prices that Correos applies to shipments under the consideration of public service meet the requirements of article 34 of Law 43/2010, of December 30, of universal postal service . Among others, they are affordable, transparent, non-discriminatory, and have been calculated taking into account the actual costs of the service.
