DHL said leaning toward German hub

The express unit of Deutsche Post World Net reportedly has given up expansion plans at the Brussels airport and is more likely to expand in Leipzig, Germany.

DHL announced last week that the conditions set by Belgian government “regrettably do not allow DHL to create an intercontinental hub at Brussels National Airport,” Frankfurt Allegmeine Zeitung reported Friday.

For now DHL will maintain its current level of activities at the airport but plans to begin moving business to other airports in 2008.

DHL will announce within two weeks whether the hub would be established in Leipzig or at Vatry in northern France, said company spokesman Xavier De Buck.

Public subsidies that DHL could receive if it opted for Leipzig suggest Germany has an edge over France for the international center.

A Leipzig newspaper reported that up to 3,000 jobs would be created in the region if DHL opted for Leipzig. The move would require an estimated $318 million.
