Sankyu and Japan Post to start Hong Kong – Japan parcel service

Sankyu Inc. (TSE:9065) and Japan Post plan on Thursday to start jointly operating a small-lot parcel delivery service from Hong Kong to Japan using marine freighters, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Monday.

The new service will be the first of the joint international logistic services by the two firms. Sankyu will pick up parcels in Hong Kong, ship them, then complete their customs clearance in Japan. Japan Post will deliver them using its Yu Pack parcel delivery service network.

The two partners expect it to be used for shipping machine and electronic parts as well as mail-order purchases.

It will likely take around 10 days for a parcel to reach its recipient in Japan, far longer than overnight delivery services offered by some air parcel delivery companies. But at 7,000 yen for a 20kg parcel, the new service costs less than half of what air freight services do.

In addition, the surface parcel shipment service will enable the shipper and recipient to track the movement of the parcel on the Internet.

In the future, Sankyu and Japan Post will handle shipments to Japan from major Southeast Asian cities, such as Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.

They also aim to add an air shipment option.

Sankyu operates an extensive distribution service network in Southeast Asia and China, mostly handling large cargo.

The joint small-lot surface parcel shipment service will be Japan Post’s first international distribution business, aside from international postal mail and parcel services.
