DHL UK places environmental management firmly on the agenda

DHL is putting consideration for the environment at the heart of business today with the implementation of an environmental management software system from Entropy International, the first of its kind to be deployed by a UK logistics company. The decision has been prompted by requests from DHL customers to have access to auditable reports on the company` s environmental policy and practice, and DHL`s commitment to increased transparency in documenting the impact of its business on the environment.

The program will be used across a majority of DHL`s premises in the UK and Ireland, with roll-out expected in 2005, as part of the organisation`s commitment to achieving ISO14001 accreditation by 2007.

“The scale of this project is enormous,” commented Nicola Phillips, Environmental Manager at DHL. “The way DHL is implementing the solution and the level of reporting it will produce is truly industry-leading and comparable in scale to only a handful of similar corporate projects in the UK.”

Hewitt Roberts, CEO of Entropy International, stated “DHL`s choice of the Entropy System to assist them to achieve an aggressive ISO 14001 implementation programme and build a comprehensive environmental management information platform is a wonderful endorsement of the value an enterprise can derive from our best-of-breed application. We look forward to a long and successful relationship with DHL, and welcome them to the Entropy community.”

Entropy is a software-based system for the implementation of ISO14001. It provides a platform that can be accessed by site managers and site environmental officers through the DHL intranet. Entropy grants access to DHL environmental best practice documents, and allows staff to enter environmental performance data in a consistent and accurate manner. This will ensure that environmental performance data such as energy consumption, fuel use and water consumption are tracked and reported accurately across DHL.

The system will hold corporate-level documentation such as fuel storage best practice, and site-level documentation such as water discharge consents, that will enable more accurate analysis and identification of environmental improvement opportunities.

The system will also allow DHL to increase the sophistication of its reporting and internal benchmarking and ensure effective compliance management by identifying key regulations on a site-specific basis and reducing the risk of regulatory oversight.

The implementation of the Entropy solution gives further support to DHL`s existing environment programmes such its 100 + LPG vehicles, and expanding its CNG truck fleet.

John Hogan, Managing Director, UK & Ireland, DHL Express, said: “Our new software platform allows us to measure and manage our interactions with the environment and the wider community and ensures that we can provide reliable and auditable environmental performance data to our customers and stakeholders.

We`re absolutely convinced that environmental management is essential to the future of any transport-based business.”
