German Saxony-Anhalt to invest 67 mln Euro to help DHL project
The state government of the northern German state of Saxony-Anhalt will invest 67 mln euro ($86 mln) to support German-based global courier firm DHL’s project to build an air freight logistics centre at the Leipzig-Halle airport, the state transport minister Karl-Heinz Daehre said on January 3, 2005.
The Saxony-Anhalt government will invest in a new runway at the Leipzig-Halle airport, and will provide land for the logistics centre.
DHL’s decision to move its logistics centre to the Leipzig region is important not only for the city, but will also positively affect the labour markets of the states of Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia, Daehre said.
He also proposed to the German transport and construction minister Manfred Stolpe to co-ordinate interstate infrastructure projects related to the relocation of the DHL logistics centre.
DHL’s site at the Leipzig-Halle airport will be the company’s main logistics centre for Europe, and will directly create nearly 3,500 jobs by 2012, and an estimated 7,000 additional jobs in the area.
