New US deputy postmaster general named
A 29-year postal employee has been named the 18th deputy postmaster general of the U.S. Postal Service, officials announced Tuesday.
The appointee, Patrick Donahoe, has been chief operating officer and executive vice president of the Postal Service since 2001. He was instrumental in helping the organization achieve record levels of service, improve the workplace environment, and stay on track for a sixth straight year of productivity gains, according to Postmaster General John Potter.
“The combination of Pat’s performance, experience and commitment to the continued transformation and success of the Postal Service makes him uniquely suited to this important new role,” said Potter at a news conference in Washington.

POSTAL SERVICE’S COO PATRICK DONAHOE BECOMES DEPUTY POSTMASTER GENERAL
Washington, D.C. – Patrick R. Donahoe, a 29-year postal employee, was named the 18th Deputy Postmaster General of the United States Postal Service. The announcement was made today by the chairman of the organization’s Board of Governors, James C. Miller III, and Postmaster General John E. Potter.
“The combination of Pat’s performance, experience and commitment to the continued transformation and success of the Postal Service makes him uniquely suited to this important new role,” said Potter.
Serving as the Postal Service’s chief operating officer and executive vice president since 2001, Donahoe was instrumental in helping the organization achieve record levels of service, improve the workplace environment, and stay on track for a sixth straight year of productivity gains.
As Deputy Postmaster General, Donahoe will serve as a member of the Board of Governors while maintaining responsibility for those activities performed by the chief operating officer – mail processing, transportation and delivery, filed operations, engineering, delivery and retail, facilities, and network operations.
Beginning his USPS career as a clerk, Donahoe advanced his skills through positions of increasing responsibility. These include Senior Vice President of Operations, Senior Vice President of Human Resources, and Allegheny Area Vice President. His academic accomplishments include a bachelor of science degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh and a master of science degree as a Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Donahoe will assume his new duties on April 30, replacing John M. Nolan who served as Deputy Postmaster General for five years.
In his new position, Donahoe will serve as a member of the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors, while maintaining responsibility for those activities performed by the chief operating officer — mail processing, transportation and delivery, field operations, engineering, delivery and retail, facilities and network operations.
