FedEx Thailand opens office close to new airport

FedEx has opened a new service centre close to Suvarnabhumi Airport, to serve customers in eastern Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chanthaburi and Rayong provinces and the heavy industrial areas of the Eastern Seaboard, The Nation reports.

“This is probably the biggest centre in Thailand, compared to those of other international express transport companies,” said David J Ross, FedEx vice president for South Pacific.

The centre is located on King Kaew Road, about 10 minutes from the new airport. It provides 500 per cent more space than FedEx’s old facilities.

It has 41,000 square feet of office and warehouse space and is capable of sorting up to 2,000 packages per hour.

Ross said Thailand was one of his company’s most important markets in Asia, because air transport to and from the country has been growing in line with predictions by the aircraft maker Boeing, that regional growth would be 8.4 per cent per year.

The new centre has 40 trucks and a staff of 60. It will serve 11 FedEx flights a week linking Bangkok with the rest of the world.

Ross said that the Thai government’s aim to make Bangkok a regional air-travel hub meant FedEx’s business here had high growth potential.

The opening of the new station followed the expansion of FedEx services across Thailand, with new and upgraded customer service centres recently opened at Nana Square, Silom Galleria, Khao San Road, Pattaya and Chiang Mai.

“FedEx is positive about the future of Thailand’s economy as well as the ability of small and medium-sized companies here to expand their business to the world,” he said.

Ross said FedEx was coping with high oil prices by imposing fuel surcharges that moved in line with the world’s oil prices.
