Record quality performance by UK Royal Mail

Royal Mail””s postmen and women have delivered to customers a record performance during April to June with a target-beating 93.4% of First Class letters arriving the day after posting, it was announced today.

The performance for the spring quarter is the best in a decade and shows an improvement on the record performance during the January to March period, according to the early results from independent research into the letter service across the UK””s 121 postcode areas.

The target level for First Class mail rose this spring from 92.5% to 93.0%.

Second Class mail also beat its target level of 98.5% delivered within three working days with a 98.6% performance.

The early results also show that the Mailsort and Presstream bulk mail services, along with Royal Mail””s Standard parcel service, are all performing above their target levels.

Adam Crozier, Royal Mail””s Chief Executive, said: “Royal Mail is determined to do even better than the record quality of service our postmen and women are delivering.

“Independent research is showing our performance running at a world-class level but Royal Mail wants to be demonstrably the very best and most trusted postal service in the world.”

Mr Crozier added that postmen and women had achieved a remarkable turnaround, turning losses on operations of more than £1 million a day into a profit of more than £2 million a day, successfully implementing operational changes and reversing service failures to deliver to customers the best quality of service in a decade. As well as speed of delivery, 99.93% of the mail was being safely delivered to the correct destination.

“The vast majority of our people now enjoy working for the company and have confidence in its future,” said Mr Crozier.

He added: “We know that we are far from perfect and still have much to do. Royal Mail wants to invest £2 billion in its operations to improve further its efficiency and quality of service to ensure the company can compete successfully in a mail market open to full competition from next January. The challenges we face remain daunting.”

A full report on Royal Mail””s quality of service during April to June will be published next month.
