Changes to the Canadian postal network in Québec
Canada Post has announced its intention to transfer the processing of Lettermail and Admail from Quebec City to Montreal. This change will allow the Corporation to maximize its operations and improve service performance.
The Quebec Letter Processing Plant no longer meets operational needs, in part because processing must be performed on several floors. Furthermore, it is located in a highly congested traffic area, which causes many access problems.
“The Montreal Plant, one of the largest in the country, is currently under-used and has the capacity to absorb this mail,” said Michel Diotte, Field Operations Vice-president at Canada Post. “Moreover, approximately 70 percent of this mail is already being sent to Montreal after first being sorted in Quebec City. Sending it to Montreal at the outset will improve service for our customers.”
Canada Post has reassured its employees that no regular employee would lose their job as a result of these changes. The high level of retirement anticipated at Canada Post over the next few years makes this an opportune time to implement these changes while limiting its impact on the workforce. All collective agreements offer excellent job security provisions and these changes will be made in compliance with these contracts.
The company will maintain a large presence in Québec as it continues to provide over 1100 jobs in its many facilities. It will reorganize its operations in order to open a Parcel Distribution Centre in the fall of 2006 in the Randin building and will relocate to new premises the Letter Carriers and the administrative employees presently located at 300 Saint-Paul Street.
The transfer of this mail to Montreal will take place in phases over a 24-month period and the building at 300 Saint-Paul Street will be sold at the end of this project.
Unlike other large companies that have rationalized their operations through massive layoffs, Canada Post is acting responsibly by adjusting its processing network to actual needs while not causing any regular employee to lose their job.
