eSprinter rollout: an extremely important step in DPDgroup’s green strategy

DPD Portugal is the first express operator to deliver 100% of its orders in Lisbon with zero-emission vehicles

55 Mercedes-Benz Vans 100% electric eSprinter vehicles are now circulating for the delivery of DPD parcels, representing a 87% reduction in current CO2 and 84% NOx emissions and avoiding close to 330 tonnes of polluting gases per year.

Olivier Establet, CEO of DPD says: “We are certain that we have marked an extremely important step in DPDgroup’s green strategy, once again showing the pioneering spirit we have had in our country in matters of sustainable development. After installing and offering, in 2019, an air quality measurement system to Lisboners that can be consulted upon receipt of their order, as well as, in 2020, two City trees that contributed to the cleaning of ambient air, the total decarbonization of our deliveries in the city of Lisbon is a giant step that fulfills our ambition of being the leader in sustainable deliveries on the ground. But we are not going to stop there, and we are also preparing the decarbonization of the city of Porto, among other measures to reduce the environmental impact in the delivery of orders that we will take care of in due course.”

Francisco Ferreira, President of Associação Zero, comments : “Larger cities such as Lisbon and Porto have serious problems in complying with the limit values for certain pollutants, mainly nitrogen dioxide resulting from road traffic associated with internal combustion vehicles. There is still a significant loss of life expectancy, in addition to causing or aggravating respiratory diseases, and also affecting the environment. In a city, companies with associated fleets, namely in distribution, given the high number of kilometers travelled, have an even greater significance in the measures they take when starting to use emission-free vehicles. ZERO considers that DPD, by guaranteeing an all-electric fleet in Lisbon this year, sets an important milestone in the effort to reduce air pollution and to decarbonise that other companies and entities must follow. The transition to electric mobility is an enormous asset for reducing air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change, in addition to significantly reducing noise”.

The supply of these vehicles is made possible by the provision of Repsol charging bases at DPD’s premises in Lisbon, a solution that reflects the company’s multi-energy offer and the company’s vision of a Single Customer. For Armando Oliveira, Managing Director of Repsol Portuguesa:

“The cooperation between Repsol, DPD Portugal and Mercedes-Benz Vans Portugal takes on added meaning and symbolism. The solution found is a clear demonstration of Repsol’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely the 17, partnerships in favor of the goals, which, by the way, will allow the pursuit of other SDGs, such as, for example, the SDG 7 “Clean and accessible energy”, SDG 11 “Sustainable cities and communities”, and SDG 13 “Fighting climate change”, which are preponderant goals throughout our strategic definition. Today, we celebrate an important moment and demonstrate how intra- and inter-sectorial synergies will allow us to overcome the planet’s most pressing challenges”.

Mário Neves, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Vans Portugal, points out that : “The availability of these 100% electric powered eSprinter vehicles reflects the global strategy of Mercedes-Benz in environmental sustainability without local emissions, with a special focus in the cities. The consolidation of the 100% electric vehicle range of Mercedes-Benz Vans will take place as early as 2022, with the launch of the eCitan, dedicated to the transport of goods and specially designed to meet the traffic requirements in urban centers, which combines a cargo space generous to the incorporation of state-of-the-art technology, in which advanced security and connectivity systems stand out.”
