Deutsche Post World Net further expands international mail network

Deutsche Post World Net is further expanding its international mail network: DHL Global Mail has reached an agreement with Yamato Holdings to form a joint venture in Japan for the Mail area. The new joint venture is the first of its kind in the country and will offer a full range of direct marketing services. DHL Global Mail, as the unit of Deutsche Post World Net responsible for the international mail business, will hold 49 percent and Yamato Holdings 51 percent of the shares. Deutsche Post World Net is therefore the first foreign service provider to make a successful entry into the Japanese mail market.
Deutsche Post World Net and Yamato have been cooperating since 2004 in the field of international mail delivery. Yamato is one of the leading private service providers for letter and parcel delivery in Japan with a broad shareholder structure and revenues of almost 8 billion euros.
The Japanese mail market provides for volumes of around 13 billion euros, the “non-correspondence” field and direct marketing are open to competition. The “non-correspondence” market segment alone encompasses almost 4 billion euros. In addition, further market potential is also available in the area of direct marketing in the amount of 7 billion euros.
With Deutsche Post World Net’s know-how in the worldwide mail business and Yamato’s many years of experience in the Japanese market, the new joint venture will offer its national and international customers in Japan direct marketing solutions from a single source. The services range from planning a direct marketing campaign including address management to the production of direct marketing mailings and the delivery in Japan, all the way to response evaluation.
“With the joint venture, we are deepening our successful cooperation of many years with Yamato and are creating an excellent platform in order to make use of the enormous opportunities in the world’s second largest mail market,” said Klaus Knappik, Chairman of Deutsche Post World Net’s Divisional Board Mail International. “The new joint venture solidifies our position as the leading worldwide complete service provider in international mail logistics and is therefore another important step in the implementation of our international mail strategy.”
“We are pleased to enter into this partnership with Deutsche Post which is a successful leader in the global mail business,” said Koji Ogura, President of Yamato Transport and Director of Yamato Holdings. “As this is a unique business model for direct marketing within the mail business in Japan, we look forward to having Deutsche Post’s know-how and experience involved in this partnership”.
Today, Deutsche Post World Net is already present in the world’s largest mail markets, for instance in the USA, the Netherlands, the UK, France, and Spain. In addition, Deutsche Post World Net also has direct connections to more than 200 countries in the cross-border mail business. The Group offers its worldwide customers high-value mail solutions along the entire value creation chain.
