DHL opens new facility in Tarragona, Spain

DHL Express has opened a new €3.8 million centre in Tarragona, south of Barcelona, offering national and international road, sea and air services. The new facility replaces an older property whose capacity was no longer sufficient to handle growing volumes.

The new Tarragona centre covers a total surface area of 11,459 sqm, has nine truck berths and 38 docking doors for delivery vehicles, as well as a sorting belt capable of handling 2,500 parcels per hour. DHL Tarragona, with over 75 staff, has an average daily turnover of 3,200 daily shipments and over 7,000 pieces, making a total of 150,000 kilos per day. In 2005, DHL closed the year in Tarragona with volumes reaching 32 million kilos, 651,000 shipments and a total of 1,600,000 pieces.

At an opening ceremony, the Managing Director of DHL Express Iberia, Felipe Corcuera, highlighted the economic and strategic importance of Tarragona, and the region’s current growth. The centre also strengthens DHL’s presence in Catalonia, where it recently signed an agreement to build new premises in Girona.
