Dutch TNT To Renew Coop Talks with Japan Post
Dutch mail and express deliveries group TNT NV will renew negotiations with Japan Post about a strategic cooperation, TNT CEO, Peter Bakker, said on June 28, 2006.
Our initial deadline to set up an international express services joint venture cannot be met, chiefly due to the ongoing privatisation of Japan Post, Bakker added.
TNT and Japan Post said earlier this week that the joint venture talks between them were ended. According to Bakker, there are many other cooperation opportunities.
Japan’s express deliveries market accounts for some 33 pct of the Asian express market. Japan Post has a domestic market share of about 10 pct, Bakker said. With a share of some 20.5 pct, TNT is market leader in Europe.
If the negotiations between both companies do not bring finally anything, Bakker does not exclude to start talks with other Japanese companies.
The CEO said further that the roll-out of the road network in India was on schedule. He expects that TNT’s offices in India will increase to 145 from 17 at the end of 2006. Bakker also sees potential acquisitions in India.
TNT (www.tnt.com) will invest some 100 mln euro ($125.5 mln) in India in the next five years.
