Portugal Postal Traffic

Portugal’s postal traffic exceeded 77 million shipments in the first quarter of 2006, up 30 pct year-on-year, data from the local communications regulator Anacom showed on July 3, 2006.

Compared to the last quarter of 2005, the country’s postal traffic grew by some 14.7 pct.

Some 4.0 million of the total number of 77 million shipments in the three-month period to March 2006 were express mail deliveries.

The national traffic in the first quarter of 2006 rounded some 72 million shipments. On the other hand, the outgoing international traffic and the incoming international traffic amounted to 5.112 million shipments and 4.334 million shipments, respectively.

The share of the country’s postal operator CTT-Correios de Portugal in the national postal traffic increased to 95.8 pct in the three-month period January to March 2006 from 94.5 pct in the previous quarter.

CTT’s share in the Portuguese outgoing postal traffic totalled 92 pct in the first quarter of 2006, compared to 89.5 pct in the last three months of the previous year. On the other hand, CTT’s share in the incoming postal traffic rose to 82.4 pct from 73.7 pct.
