Cainiao Expands Delivery Network in Spain

Cainiao, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group, today announced it has extensively expanded its delivery network in Spain during its annual Global Smart Logistics Summit held in Hangzhou, China.

Having acquired the Spanish delivery company EcoScooting last year, Cainiao has intensively developed its service coverage nationwide. Today, the network covers 60% of the Spanish population spanning over 30 major Spanish cities. The company now offers next-day delivery in 9 major cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, etc. as well as two-day delivery service in over 20 Spanish cities. It also offers tailor-made green delivery solutions for low-carbon areas in major cities in Spain using electric vans or scooters.

“We’ve achieved this rapid development thanks to a combination of local know-how from the EcoScooting team and Cainiao’s smart logistics infrastructure and technologies as we continuously invest in this market,” said William Xiong, Senior Vice President at Cainiao Group, “We are committed to providing to our customers in Spain and across the world with a more sustainable and efficient delivery service.”

In 2021, Cainiao officially launched its first sorting centre in Spain, located in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), with a total surface of 19,000 sqm. Cainiao has equipped the sorting centre with automated sorting machines with a maximum processing capacity of 20,000 packages per hour. Cainiao’s self-developed PDA Lemo and RFID technologies have also been put into use to further improve operational efficiency and traceability in the warehouse. Part of the warehouse also serves as a fulfillment center for local e-commerce merchants.

As a commitment to a greener delivery service, Cainiao has also developed a network of around 500 parcel lockers in Madrid and Barcelona to offer a faster, more efficient, and lower carbon footprint experience.
