BT lets data flow for German postal Service

BT has announced today that the company has won a contract from the German postal service (Deutsche Post AG) to implement and operate a nationwide data network. Under the terms of this contract, BT will ensure the smooth data exchange between 84 national and international mail distribution centres and the service department in Darmstadt.

BT is to develop a “machine WAN” (Wide Area Network) for Deutsche Post, providing communication between the IT systems at the various locations, using state-of-the-art network technology based on the MPLS standard.

The mail distribution centres handle all national mail of Deutsche Post and ensure the reliable and timely delivery of over 70 million letters a day.
Jan Geldmacher, CEO of BT Germany, explains:

– We are delighted that Deutsche Post have placed their confidence in us. Thanks to our vast experience we are sure we can provide the Post with optimum support for their processes.

The 84 locations will be connected to BT’s MPLS network with bandwidths of 34 Mbit/s. MPLS technology (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) allows data traffic to be divided into up to six ‘classes of service’ (CoS), thus ensuring that time-critical data can always be assigned the highest priority. Compared to conventional network solutions, MPLS offers higher flexibility and allows for the provision of higher bandwidths short-term or the quick integration of additional locations into the network.
