FedEx Express: New logistics facilities in Leipzig and Karlsruhe further proof of our long-term growth ambitions

FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., announces today that it will open a new logistics facility northwest of Leipzig and an expanded, modernised facility in Karlsruhe in the first quarter of next year.

Construction work is progressing steadily. The new set-up significantly improves sorting capacity, making both facilities well equipped to meet demand from customers in the region.

The new building is being constructed for the 27 team members in Kabelsketal in the immediate vicinity of Leipzig/Halle Airport. The site, which covers over 17,000 square metres, offers space for a warehouse of around 3,400 square metres and an office area of over 850 square metres. The site will have six loading bays for lorries, 63 for vans and six for 7.5-tonne trucks. Twelve charging stations will be installed for electric vans and six for employees’ cars. The sorting capacity will double compared to the previous set-up. A new loading and unloading concept will reduce traffic in the warehouse helping to improve warehouse safety. A suburban railway connection close to the site will ensure good connections to the cities of Leipzig and Halle.

The location in Karlsruhe will be expanded and modernised on the existing 3,600 square metre site. Once operational, it will have a higher handling capacity. At approx. 2,500 square metres, the warehouse doubles in size and has a truck loading ramp as well as 24 loading bays to load and unload shipments. The sorting process in the warehouse is largely automated, which will reduce the sorting time by around a third and almost doubling the sorting capacity. The height-adjustable and extendable conveyor belt also facilitates the handling of consignments. Three new jobs will be created as part of the expansion, with 17 team members currently working at the site.

“The locations in Leipzig and Karlsruhe are further proof of our long-term growth ambitions,” says Stefan Dries, Vice President Ground Operations Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Nordics for FedEx Express. “Following the modernisation of our air gateway in Stuttgart and the opening of our location in Nufringen, we are also optimising our processes at these locations in order to offer our customers even better service and support in expanding their businesses.”

In early summer 2022, FedEx Express opened its facility in Nufringen. The facility offers improved express services with later pick-up times and increased capacity. In spring 2023, the company also opened its expanded Air Gateway Stuttgart. The new set-up is well-equipped to meet the export and import demands of customers in the region due to its higher handling speed and increased capacity.
