DHL freight’s new terminal to create “double added value for our customers and our environment”

DHL Freight today celebrated the grand opening of its new terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde.
With an area of 5,200 m², 48 loading gates and state-of-the-art infrastructure, the site replaces the current facility in the centre of Berlin, which has reached its capacity limits. With its location close to the city centre and sustainable technology, the new terminal sets standards for logistics and environmental awareness in the capital region. The opening ceremony was attended by representatives from politics, business and project partners, including Dr. Ann-Kathrin Biewener, Head of Economic Development of the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district, Berlin, Dr. Thomas Vogel, CEO DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE, Götz Hanningsmann, Area Manager North DHL Freight, real estate developer Marc Urbatsch, Managing Director of Operatio GmbH, Frank Gottschalk, Project Manager of Bremer Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH.
“The new terminal in Berlin City represents not only an expansion of our capacities, but also our commitment to more sustainable logistics. In addition to various alternative forms of propulsion such as e-trucks, we have attached importance to measures such as photovoltaics, wind turbines and modern water management at the site itself,” explains Dr. Thomas Vogel, CEO DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE. “With modern technologies and optimized processes, we can help to make the transport of goods and commodities in the region not only more efficient, but also more sustainable. In this way, we create double added value for our customers and our environment.”
Pioneering technology and sustainable operations
The terminal was built in line with DHL’s sustainability strategy. The focus is on a holistic concept for more sustainable logistics: For local transport, the vehicle fleet is being converted to alternative drives – from electric forklifts to natural gas-powered trucks to battery-electric trucks, which are already being used for last-mile deliveries. The technical infrastructure of the terminal itself is consistently geared towards energy efficiency: a heat pump system ensures the right temperature for you, while a rainwater cistern optimises water consumption. Energy-saving LED lighting was installed as standard. Charging stations with electricity from renewable sources are available for both cars and trucks in local and long-distance transport. A photovoltaic system and wind turbines for self-supply of electricity round off the energy concept.
Strengthening the European DHL Freight network
The new terminal in Marienfelde is part of DHL Freight’s long-term growth strategy. With its location in the south of Berlin, it not only improves the efficiency and quality of services for customers in the capital region, but also strengthens the entire European network. In addition to handling general cargo and full loads, innovative logistics solutions are also being tested here to better serve future requirements.
Background and project history
The new building was built on a former industrial site on Buckower Chaussee. The project development and implementation was in the hands of Operatio GmbH and Bremer Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH. The symbolic groundbreaking ceremony for the construction took place in November 2023. Within just 14 months, a modern forwarding facility was built on the 20,000 square metre site, replacing the previous inner-city terminal. In addition to Marienfelde, DHL Freight operates another location in Wustermark in the region. Together, the two locations form an optimal starting point for logistics services in the Berlin-Brandenburg region.
