DHL: With the use of e-vehicles for last-mile delivery, we are taking an important step

In March, DHL 2-Mann-Handling GmbH is expanding its e-fleet for low-emission delivery of large and bulky goods on the so-called “last mile” in parts of Germany. A total of 21 new e-transporters will be used in Lower Saxony, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia, Berlin, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.

The gradual switch to e-mobility at the DHL subsidiary is part of the Group’s sustainability program. Deutsche Post and DHL are pioneers of e-mobility in Germany with a total of 32,400 e-vehicles for letter and parcel delivery. More than 50 percent of the delivery routes in the Post & Parcel Germany division have already been converted to electric drive – and now the conversion of the vehicle fleet for the delivery of large and bulky goods is also starting.

Beate Seeher, Managing Director of DHL 2-Mann-Handling GmbH and responsible for sustainability, says: “We focus on sustainability, not only in our buildings and operational processing. With the use of e-vehicles for last-mile delivery, we are taking an important step. We can now also deliver more large and bulky goods, such as furniture, washing machines or TVs, to the end customer with reduced emissions. This is entirely in the interest of consumers.” Each electric vehicle saves around 20.4 tonnes of CO2e-emissions (according to the “well-to-wheel” analysis) and 6,400 litres of diesel per year compared to a combustion engine in its category.

Shippers have the option of expanding their delivery to include the GoGreen or GoGreen Plus shipping services. In the form of offsetting the CO2e emissions generated through global climate protection projects (GoGreen) or direct emissions savings through reduction measures in the national DHL network (GoGreen Plus), customers can access certified services, as well as with the Group’s parcel and letter products.

DHL 2-Mann-Handling GmbH specialises in the transport and delivery of large and bulky goods and employs a total of around 400 people in Germany. From the central hub in Ludwigsau and from the second location in Landsberg, more than 30 regional DHL base partners in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are supplied with shipments every day. The delivery then takes place after prior telephone appointment notification to a delivery location desired by the end customer, if necessary also with assembly. DHL 2-Mann-Handling has been active on the market since January 2020 as an independent subsidiary of the Post & Parcel Germany division.
