Evri on de minimis: millions of SMEs risk delayed or returned parcels

Evri has today announced its solution to trump the tariffs to support customers and clients to maintain deliveries to the US – the biggest ecommerce market.

The US Administration has announced the elimination of the US de minimis exemption for parcels, from 29th August 2025, which will be inconvenient and disruptive for both retailers and end consumers. All low-value international shipments and commercial imports will now require full customers declarations, duty and tax assessments and complete shipment documentation which can tie businesses up with additional costs and paperwork.

Many postal services around the world have announced pausing deliveries to the US until they have systems in place. Since then, through its existing solution, Evri has seen a 30 per cent increase in US parcel traffic over the last week.

In May, earlier this year, in anticipation of disruption of services to the US for both companies and individual customers. Evri built a new and innovative solution, which has been tried and tested over recent months, that not only withstands the shift in customs rules in the US but offers a smoother, faster experience.

This existing scalable technology enables it to adapt, and it has a solution in place, which is live, to support customers and clients to maintain deliveries to the US with minimal disruption. Evri has two customs clearance options, giving retailers solutions that work best for their business and customers, and crucially enabling UK-based SMEs and larger retailers to protect an important revenue source.

One option is a ‘retail-paid duty model’ that includes higher duty and taxes to the retailer, but no surprises to the end customer. Evri manages and pay charges on behalf of the retailer, then invoices back, to keep the process simple and reduce paperwork.

The second option a ‘customer-prepaid duty model’ in which Evri will proactively contact the US-based customer whilst the parcel is in the UK to collect duties and taxes upfront and ensure smooth entry to the US.

Statistics from Department for Business & Trade indicate there are 5.45 million small businesses in the UK. For any of these businesses that currently trade with the US, a solution is essential to ensure continued trade.

Evri has recently invested £11 million in its international proposition to offer full tracking, deliveries up to seven days a week, and US-based fulfilment solutions which can support SMEs and retailers alike to keep costs low. These solutions also cover Canada, Switzerland, EU and MENA regions.

Craig Lee, Director of International at Evri, said: “With the de minimis exemption removed, millions of SMEs risk delayed or returned parcels, with significant added expense. We’ve trumped the tariffs and are pleased to offer a solution to remove the risk for those businesses, by doing the leg work and collecting parcel taxes and duties up front, supporting UK-based SMEs to retain a crucial income stream in a challenging retail climate.”
