Spanish express market forecast to grow 8.2% this year

Spain’s courier and parcels market is expanding rapidly, forecast to increase by 8.2% this year to euro6.6 billion following a 7% rise in revenues in 2005 and over 9% the year before.

The expansion is due to strong industrial output, the internationalisation of trade and an electronic commerce boom, say Spanish researchers DBK.

Business parcels overall grew 8.6% last year and industrial packages by 5.1%. International parcel deliveries were up, for the industrial sector by over 10% and the business sector by 8%.

Seur, MRW, DHL, Iberia TNT and MEX are the main players with a combined market share of almost half. Over 5,300 companies registered to collect and deliver mail, 7% up on 2004, according to the study.

“The most dynamic growth corresponded to business parcels, stimulated by good performance by the private sector,” the report says.

“Geographical coverage by the main players is growing all the time, the expansion often based on the development of franchise networks and alliances between operators.”
