DHL: The new gateway is designed to meet the needs of the Finnish economy

DHL Express Finland today inaugurated its new logistics gateway at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL).

The state-of-the-art facility has direct access to the apron of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, which allows for shorter loading and unloading times for aircraft. Equipped with an automated sorting system capable of processing 6,500 parcels per hour and 90 direct charging bays with charging stations for electric vehicles, the gateway stands for efficiency and innovation. As part of DHL’s commitment to sustainability, the facility will be CO2-neutral and will use geothermal energy, solar panels and energy-efficient technologies. In addition, effective security measures, including TAPA A certification and advanced X-ray scanning technology for air cargo handling, have been implemented. The new gateway represents the largest investment in the history of DHL Express in Finland – a total of around EUR 100 million for new facilities and technology in the Aviapolis area. It will handle international, European, national and local parcels transported by air or road, from urgent to less urgent deliveries. The first customer deliveries from the plant are scheduled to begin in October 2025.

“The new gateway is designed to meet the needs of the Finnish economy. It enables more efficient and environmentally friendly processes and offers our employees a modern and comfortable facility. This investment supports growth and helps Finnish companies to reach international markets,” says Oktay Nuri, Managing Director of DHL Express Finland.

“This gateway is an important step in DHL’s mission: Connecting people, improving lives. The DHL Trade Atlas 2025 has shown that global trade continues to grow, even though geopolitical tensions may lead to changes in trade relations, transport flows and the regulatory environment. By investing in infrastructure, DHL Express is preparing to meet this growth by offering services that meet different customer needs – from the fastest options to more flexible solutions. The investment in Finland reflects our confidence in the country’s and Europe’s economy,” says Mike Parra, CEO of DHL Express Europe.

Processing of up to 6,500 parcels per hour
The modern facility covers approximately 16,000 square meters of gross floor area – more than doubling the current operating area. The new gateway features an advanced automated sorting system capable of processing around 6,500 parcels per hour, as well as over 90 direct loading bays that enable seamless sorting from conveyors to delivery vehicles, all equipped with electric vehicle charging stations. This state-of-the-art environment not only improves operational efficiency, but also prioritizes employee well-being by providing a spacious and functional workspace with a focus on safety, environmental considerations, and high-quality amenities.

Goal: net zero emissions by 2050
In line with DHL’s sustainability goals, the Helsinki Gateway is CO2 neutral. The primary heating system will be geothermal, while the electricity will be generated via solar energy. Advanced building automation, energy-efficient building materials, handling equipment and LED lighting are all part of the energy efficiency strategy.

For 43 years, DHL Express has been supporting Finnish companies with international door-to-door express deliveries. The new logistics centre further strengthens this role and offers even more efficient connections for Finnish companies and consumers to the global market. Fast and reliable deliveries are an essential part of Finland’s economic competitiveness.
