Walter Oblin: two large Austrian companies are combining their strengths
The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Österreichische Post AG are launching a cooperation for the construction of 24/7 post stations in front of railway stations.
Rail passengers can thus conveniently combine their daily journeys with the collection or dispatch of parcels. In the next few months, around 50 new 24/7 post stations will be built at ÖBB stations throughout Austria. For the first time, energy-self-sufficient post stations will also be used, which will supply themselves with electricity via a photovoltaic module on the roof.
Silvia Angelo, Member of the Executive Board, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG: “Stations are central mobility hubs – places where people can not only arrive and depart every day, but also take advantage of services. The new 24/7 post stations are a further step towards anchoring stations as modern service centres in people’s everyday lives and making our passengers’ journeys even more efficient. I am particularly pleased that we are also focusing on innovative, energy-self-sufficient solutions – a further step towards a sustainable and modern infrastructure for Austria.”
Walter Oblin, CEO of Österreichische Post AG: “With this cooperation, two large Austrian companies are combining their strengths to make people’s everyday lives even easier and more convenient. Our new locations at the stations bring Swiss Post even closer to our customers and make it possible to optimally connect routes. I am particularly proud of the use of the first energy-self-sufficient post office with a photovoltaic module. It supplies itself with electricity and thus takes an important step towards sustainable and future-oriented infrastructure.”
The joint commissioning of the 24/7 post office in front of the train station in Leobendorf in Lower Austria marks the official start of the cooperation. The post office has more than 50 compartments and is located directly in front of the station building, opposite the Park & Ride parking lots. It is now accessible around the clock for the collection or dispatch of pre-franked parcels (return label or parcel stamp).
The new 24/7 post office also has its own photovoltaic module and a built-in rechargeable battery for the first time, which means that no connection to the power grid is required. When there is sufficient sunlight, the photovoltaic module not only ensures the ongoing supply, but also charges the battery for use in bad weather or in the evening. Swiss Post will now also use this new type of energy-self-sufficient 24/7 post stations at other new locations on an ongoing basis.
The cooperation between ÖBB and Austria Post will be rolled out continuously throughout Austria over the next few months.
